Dr. Oz Says Raspberry Ketones Can Help You Lose Body Fat. Do they?

I’ve never heard of raspberry ketones until a subscriber asked me to write about them since Dr. Oz gave it his approval. Dr. Oz is one thing, but is it Igor-approved? Let’s see.

First of all, if you want to see that episode of Dr. Oz, here’s the 5-minute clip where he’s talking about raspberry ketones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw1N4j3moJY

So what’s a raspberry ketone? It’s simply what gives raspberries their unique smell (to those wondering, no, these ketones have nothing to do with the ketones produced on low carbohydrate diets).

The clip seemed a bit sensationalistic. “You don’t have to change your eating patterns or exercise. Just take some raspberry ketones, and you’ll lose body fat.” Come on! So I decided to take a look at the research.

One study I found (this one: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20425690) said that when male mice were given raspberry ketones, while simultaneously being fed a high-fat diet, they did not gain weight on that diet.

Another study I looked at (this one: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15862604) found the same thing.

So what’s my verdict? My verdict is that although it shows some promise, more research is needed. There are still too many unanswered questions, like:

  1. These studies were done on mice. Mice aren’t humans. What happens when this is done on humans?
  2. These studies measure weight. If you’ve been reading my newsletter for any length of time (or heard my talks), you realize that weight isn’t fat. I’m curious what happens to both body fat and lean body mass as a result of raspberry ketones.
  3. What are the long-term effects of taking raspberry ketones?
  4. Are there any side effects?
  5. How do raspberry ketones interact with other nutrients and/or medications?

This is just scratching the surface.

So is it Igor-approved? Not yet.

But if you decided to give raspberry ketones a try, let me know what effects you notice.

Quick Summary

Raspberry ketones are a supplement that shows some promise as a weight loss aid, but the picture is far from complete, and there are still too many unanswered questions.
