Wine or Pizza: What’s Better?

Recently, one of my butt-kicking clients asked on facebook “are sugars more dangerous than carbs?”

This question had me a bit confused since sugars ARE carbs. So then she clarified: “what’s worse: wine or pizza/bread”?

And then, Lynna, one of my friends from high school replied “Igor’s going to say “BOTH, DEPENDING ON KSDJF;KLADSJFAS”.” And boy, was she right.

But before we get to that, let’s clarify something.

There are 3 types of carbs:

  1. Simple sugars. These are things like candy, fruit, etc.
  2. Complex (aka “starchy”) carbs. These are things like bread, potatoes, etc.
  3. Fibrous carbs. These are veggies.

So it’s a big misconception that veggies aren’t carbs. Yes, they are.

Now, for my “it depends.” Whether wine is worse or “carbs”. It depends on:

  • The quantity consumed. One glass of wine is probably better than consuming a whole pizza. 4 glasses of wine are probably worse than consuming just a slice of pizza.
  • Do you have any sensitivities to any of those foods?
  • Are you listening to Modern Talking while eating or drinking? Because as scientific studies show, listening to Modern Talking (aka the greatest band of all time. What? Am I the only one who likes 1980s European pop?) makes pizza and wine and ice cream health foods. Sorry… inside joke (but join me on facebook to get on the “inside”).

Most of the time, I would say that alcohol is worse. I know, I know what you’re thinking “but Igor, they say that a glass of red wine is good for you.” Well, my friend, “they” are not telling you the full story. But I will (aren’t you glad you’re a subscriber to this newsletter?).

It’s not the alcohol that’s good for you. It’s the antioxidants in the wine that are good for you. There isn’t much debate that alcohol is not good for you. You could get the same benefits out of grape juice, with none of the drawbacks. To take it one step farther, you could get even more benefits out of, get this, grapes (purple grapes, specifically).

What does alcohol do in your body?

Your body perceives alcohol as a toxin. So when you drink alcohol (whether it’s wine or beer or vodka, etc.), your body goes on red alert. It stops everything it’s doing, and works hard to get the alcohol out of your system as fast as possible. That means that whatever you had to eat isn’t being digested if you had alcohol with it, and it’s just sitting there in your stomach, rotting, until your body finished getting the alcohol out of your system.

Having said that, is a glass of wine now and then going to kill you? No.

Quick Summary

  • There are 3 types of carbs:
    • Simple carbs
    • Starchy carbs
    • Fibrous carbs
  • It’s not the alcohol in the wine that’s good for you. It’s the antioxidants.
  • Alcohol is a toxin, and your body shuts down other functions in order to get the toxins out.
