I just finished reading The Disease Delusion by Dr. Jeffrey Bland. And boy, when I picked it up, I was super-excited. Dr. Jeffrey Bland has a stellar reputation in the natural medicine community, so I had very high expectations when I picked up the book. I have to say that I was slightly disappointed.
Original source: here.
It was a good book, but it didn’t meet my expectations. Why?
- There’s very little actual how-to information.
- The first part was very “fluffy”. By that, I mean it had a lot of information, but nothing that you can really act upon. It talks about the current picture of chronic disease, a chronology of medicine, an explanation that your genetics aren’t destiny. That’s all fine, but it could have all been said in 2-5 pages. Not 70.
- The action steps to correcting your unique imbalances are too vague to have practical value.
The Disease Delusion, however did have some redeeming points:
- For the lay person with no background in physiology, it’s a good introduction.
- Dr. Jeffrey Bland breaks down and explains the physiology of what can go wrong in a clear way.
- Although he uses technical terms here and there, it’s a fairly conversational tone.
